Royal Mail Size Limits & Pricing in Proportion Guide
Royal Mail formats use size, thickness and weight criteria. This guide helps you identify whether an item fits Letter, Large Letter, Small Parcel or Medium Parcel dimensions and choose suitable packaging.
| Format | Maximum Size | Maximum Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Letter | 240mm x 165mm x 5mm | 100g |
| Large Letter | 353mm x 250mm x 25mm | 750g |
| Small Parcel | 450mm x 350mm x 160mm | 2kg |
| Medium Parcel | 610mm x 460mm x 460mm | 20kg |
Standard Letter
Greetings cards, personal letters, postcards and bills are typical examples of items that may fall into the Letter format, provided they remain within the maximum dimensions and weight.
Large Letter
Smaller goods such as magazines, certificates, A4 documents and suitably packed media can fall into Large Letter if the finished packed item remains no larger than 353mm x 250mm x 25mm and no heavier than 750g.
Small & Medium Parcels
Items that exceed Large Letter dimensions will normally fall into a parcel format. Small Parcel has a maximum size of 450mm x 350mm x 160mm and maximum weight of 2kg. Medium Parcel permits up to 610mm x 460mm x 460mm and 20kg for relevant services.
Tubes & Rolls
Royal Mail also publishes specific conditions for tubes and rolls on certain services. Current guidance states a maximum length of 90cm and maximum 2kg, with length plus twice the diameter less than 104cm. Check the exact service before posting.
